Mike Kawate Seals 1st Major!
2009 Ewa Beach Championship-
Ewa Beach Golf
Club, June 20 & 21.
6.23.2009-- Mike Kawate (73-74
(pictured above)) weathered the strong winds, torturous pins
placements, and tough paspalum rough at the Ewa Beach Golf Club
to win the Amatour’s first major tournament of the 2009 season,
the Ewa Beach Championship. His 2 day total of 147 topped
Eric Sonnenberg(76-74) and Craig Watanabe(74-76) by 3 strokes.
High winds and tricky pin placements played havoc on the
players, as no one was able to shoot par on either day. Saturday’s play produced no skins,
so Sunday’s skins pot was doubled. Mike Trevino (birdie 3 on
hole #1), Mark Chun (birdie 3 on #2), Chris DeAlmeida (3 on hold
#3), Leighton Uyeda (birdie 2 on hole #13), and Craig Watanabe
(birdie 2 on hole #16) each took home $204 on Sunday.

Ryan Perez Seals Coral Creek Classic by 1!
2009 Amatour Hawaii
Coral Creek Classic-
Coral Creek Golf
Course, May 30 & 31.
5.31.2009--
Under clear skies and warm conditions at the Coral Creek Golf
Course, Ryan Perez (70-75) held on the second day of the
tournament to win by one stroke over Kelii Sur (72-75) and
Kellen Floyd-Asao (73-73). The course played longer that normal
because the wind blew in a westerly direction, making the long
holes play as much as two clubs longer than normal. The course
was in excellent condition, with lush fairways, healthy rough,
and greens rolling between 8 and 9 on the stimp. The paspalum
rough and firm greens made chipping a real adventure, and the
tricky pin placements, some on the slopes of the greens like on
holes #8 and 10 on Sunday, added to the challenging conditions.
Vance Watabu aced the 178
yard sixth hole which played against the wind, hitting a solid 4
iron that dropped into the hole to win one of five skins on
Saturday. There was only one skin on Sunday though, an eagle on
the par 5 fifth hole by Jared Kato.
The Amatour would like to
thank Brian and the staff at Coral Creek, and the Pueo
Restaurant for extending their hospitality to the players and
for their help in making the event a success. As always, thanks
to Sue, Lana, Corrine, and Charlie for running the show so
smoothly.

Mark Takahama 2009
Medalist at Amatour Hawaii Qualifier!
2009 Amatour Hawaii
Qualifying Tournament-
Makaha Resort & Golf Club, March 21 & 22.
3.24.2009--
Mark Takahama
captured medalist honors for the 2009 Amatour Hawaii Qualifying
Tournament this past weekend finishing the tournament at even
par, shooting 70 on Saturday, and 72 on Sunday. The course
played to a par of 71, because the seventh hole green was washed
out by heavy rains, so the front 9 ended with two par 3s and a
par of 35, and the 16th hole was a new hole, a par 3 that
playing to about 150 yards. Mark
won the first event for the Bridgestone Golf promotion by using
the B330 RX golf ball.
Mark and the 35 other top
finishers qualified for the 2009 Amatour season which will start
on April 25th and 26th at Turtle Bay. 108 players
tried to qualify for the 36 spots, and 37 players shot 155 or
better. Normally, there would have been a playoff for the 36th
spot, but Daron Rilveria , who shot 155 had to leave, so all the
remaining golfers at 155 qualified and Daron became the first
alternate. The top 25 places in the Qualifier were awarded
gift certificates, and the 36 qualifiers were given Amatour
wallets.
Michael Sheiman started his
round on Saturday with a hole in one on the par 3 9th
hole, a smooth 5 iron that hit the green and rolled right into
the hole. Soon after, Eric Takaki double eagled the 11th,
holing out a choked up 3 wood for deuce on the par 5. Those two
gems resulted in the only 2 skins for the day. On Sunday, 4
skins were awarded.
Course conditions were
excellent, and the weather co-operated for a the first time in
two years, with variable winds and sunshine on both days. A
special thanks goes out to Stacey and the staff at the Makaha
Resort Golf Course for all their help and cooperation. The
Amatour would also like to thanks all the players for playing at
a good pace. Even with a full field of 108 players, the
tournament finished up long before sunset, unlike a few past
Qualifiers that ended in the dark.
